The transformation of media is happening before our very eyes. Every day, with new technology, we are seeing a change in the way media is produced, delivered and consumed. In fact, this very paper you're reading is providing you with news, information and hopefully a look into some of the fascinating ways in which media, in all its forms, is radically changing.
One constant, however, is that access to information is essential to the health of democracy, for it ensures that citizens make responsible, informed choices. Media also reflect a society's cultural interests and trends and in this issue, we're going to explore its freedom and responsibilities as well as a bit of its humour. The Sydney Morning Herald has just celebrated its 177th birthday, making it one of the oldest publications in the world. Herald Education strives to bring you quality resources in education to encourage learning and inspire thought. We hope Media in the 21st Century will help open eyes, spark discussion and enliven your classroom.
